Welcome to our new Web site!

(Posted October 22, 2009)

The Agriculture Union today takes the wraps off a completely new Web site. You’ll find all the content from our old site, along with new features and additional information. And it’s all presented in a simpler, cleaner ‘look’ that improves usability.

Among the improvements, you’ll find:

          • A more compact, less ‘busy’ design sporting brighter, contrasting colours.

          • Larger and more readable menu and sub-menu tabs, relocated from the top to the left-hand-side of the

                  page.

          • A column of ‘quick links’ – on the right-hand side of our site’s main page – that provides fast and

convenient access to the most-frequently visited Web site pages.

          • A ‘Print’ button on each page.

          • An improved search engine (operational October 30).

          • The ability to select from among several text font sizes, to increase accessibility and ease of reading, by

clicking on the ‘Text Size’ button at the top of each page.

          • A ‘quick link’ permitting members to e-mail article ideas and photos to the National Office and Webmaster.

          • A new ‘Education’ page that directly links to the education section of the PSAC Web site.

          • Direct access to commonly-used electronic forms on the Treasury Board and Public Service Staffing

                   Tribunal Web sites.

A great deal of thought went into the redesign of our new site. In particular a ‘focus group’ of Agriculture Union activists attending last year’s Triennial National Convention produced a number of useful suggestions that have been incorporated into the new site design.

Of course, we’ve carried over all the content and features that made our old site popular with Agriculture Union members: information on the structure and services offered by our union; direct e-mail access to the National Executive, National Council and National Office staff; the ability to update your membership information electronically; a series of downloadable fact sheets on common workplace issues and problems; and, the opportunity to subscribe to an electronic service that will deliver Agriculture Union news directly to your e-mail in-box.

As always our Web site is fully bilingual, with members able to switch between official languages on every page.

Our new site will continue to expand and evolve over time. As is always the case with the launch of a new Web site, there will be teething problems and a few hiccups along the way. As always, we appreciate your support and welcome your suggestions for new features and improvements.

Congratulations to our latest ROP Bursary recipients

(Posted October 16, 2009)

Congratulations to Marie-Josée Cardinal and Brent Puchalski. These two young people are the latest recipients of the Agriculture Union’s ROP Bursary.

The ROP bursary was established by delegates to our 1990 Triennial National Convention in recognition of the former Record of Performance Inspectors whose jobs were lost to government privatization in the 1980s.

The $1,000 bursary is open to all Agriculture Union members and their dependants.  However, it must be applied to an agriculture course from a recognized institution.

Brent is in his third year of a BSc in Agriculture Crop Science at the University of Alberta. His father Byron, an employee of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, is a member of Local 48 in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Marie-Josée, an Ottawa native, is in her second year of a BSc in Agricultural Sciences at the Macdonald campus of Montreal’s McGill University. Her father Denis is a member of Local 67, representing our Canadian Food Inspection Agency members in the National Capital.

Congratulations, once again, to these deserving recipients of our ROP Bursary.

A reminder that applications for next year’s bursary must be completed and received at the Agriculture Union National Office by June 30, 2010. An application form can be downloaded HERE.

(Posted October 6, 2009)

Congratulations to Wendy Hooisma, who submitted the winning design for a new logo for our Social Justice Fund. Her successful entry can be seen below:

The contest, open to Agriculture Union members and their families, was launched a number of months ago. Among the submissions received, Wendy's was judged to have best represented the outreach and global vision that are at the heart of our SJF.

Wendy is a graphic artist whose spouse, James, is a member of Local 16 in London, Ontario.

The Agriculture Union Social Justice Fund was approved at our union’s 2008 Triennial National Convention and officially launched in January 2009. Information on the Fund and approved projects can be found by clicking HERE.
